Blog Home : Category Posts : What to Do in the Smoky Mountains from Gatlinburg (By Travel Type)

Smoky Mountain Vacations in the Gatlinburg area are fun and often lead to new memories, but to make that happen, you have to know what to do in the Smoky Mountains from Gatlinburg. The best way to answer that question is to plan your getaway according to your travel style. Are you a solo traveler? Are you bringing the whole family? No matter the occasion, our guide for Smoky Mountain trip planning has you covered.

Why Your Travel Style Shapes Your Smoky Mountains Experience

At first glance, your travel style doesn't matter so much, but with the proper planning, it can shape your entire Smoky Mountain experience and make it your most memorable getaway. When you're traveling alone, there will naturally be activities that appeal to you more than if you were traveling with kids or enjoying a retreat with friends.

So, how do you make a Smoky Mountain itinerary that fits you best? We're here to help break down the type of vacations you can expect depending on who you bring and what you like.

Smoky Mountain Adventures for Families

Most vacations to the Smoky Mountains are done by families, and for good reason. There are lots of things to do in the Smoky Mountains with your family, including but not limited to:

  • Easy Hikes: The national park is right there and offers dozens of trails, making it a breeze to experience nature's beauty without overtaxing the group. Plus, the kids will be excited to discover new sights.
  • Scenic Drives: Whether you’re traveling on the Roaring Fork Motor Trail or the Spur, there's no shortage of scenic drives to experience in the Gatlinburg area. The best part? They lead to new adventures you wouldn't have considered.
  • Activities and Attractions: With a quick drive, everything from Anakeesta and Ober Mountain to the fun ziplines and Ripley’s Aquarium is within reach, creating an easy way for everyone in the family to have fun with minimal travel.

While there are a lot of ways to have a good time with the family, the most important part is to keep everyone together. Fortunately, with the help of family-sized cabin rentals, everyone can have plenty of room while remaining nearby, setting the scene for a memorable escape.

Smoky Mountains for Couples & Honeymooners

When you're with that special someone, there's no greater feeling, except when you're enjoying a break from everyday life. For those moments, a Smoky Mountain couples' trip is an excellent option.

Imagine starting your trip with a quiet retreat in a honeymoon cabin surrounded by mountain scenery and a warm fireplace. From there, the entirety of the Smoky Mountains is at your fingertips.

One moment, you're browsing the Village Shoppes for a bite to eat and a fun souvenir, and the next, you're visiting the SkyBridge to enjoy a romantic date and one of the best vantage points in Gatlinburg.

Additionally, there are dozens of restaurants, perfect for a date night. Enjoy live music and excellent food at Blake Shelton's Ole Red or wind down with a quiet evening for two at the Alibi before returning to your cabin rental.

While romance is in the air, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a little bit of extra fun. Go on a float trip during the summer season or visit the arts and crafts community for a unique way to spend time with the one who holds your heart.

Group Trips & Adult Getaways in the Smoky Mountains

What if you're traveling with a bunch of friends who are all adults? Can you still have an incredible experience? The answer is a resounding yes! Some excellent options for your Smoky Mountain group trip include:

  • Wine and whiskey tours: These tours take you all over the Smoky Mountains and offer free tastings, with some locations also providing food. For a fun time during the day, this is a no-brainer.
  • Extreme Adventures: Whether you want to hit the rapids, go ziplining, or go off-roading, there's an option available for the whole group. If your friends want adrenaline, the sky's the limit. Best part? No one will be limited in their ability to participate.
  • Longer Drives: With kids, drives naturally need to be shorter. With adults? All of a sudden, you can enjoy longer drives like the trail to North Carolina for a day trip or you can explore every part of the mountains. It's all in your hands.

While everyone can grab their own hotel room, an easy way to coordinate your group is to stay in a large group cabin rental in the part of Gatlinburg you want to stay. Plenty of space for everyone while remaining close to adventures? It's an absolute win for everyone.

Solo Travelers & Choose-Your-Own Adventure Trips

For solo trips, the options are limitless. Grab a 1-bedroom cabin rental for the perfect home base and let the Gatlinburg area guide you to fun, relaxation, and everything else you could want.

When you're traveling alone, the schedule is yours. Do you want to visit Anakeesta in the morning? You can! Are you interested in taking on the most challenging hikes? Grab your hiking boots and hit the trail!

After a fun day exploring Gatlinburg, your cabin offers the refuge you need while providing just enough space to spread out for a good night's rest. Add extra amenities like a hot tub for that extra bit of relaxation and get ready for another exciting day without limits.

What Every Smoky Mountain Trip Has in Common

We've covered how to make your trip unique according to your travel style, but what factors are nearly universal when vacationing in the Smoky Mountains? For starters, the view. Many cabins in Gatlinburg double as mountain view cabins, meaning you can enjoy nature's beauty without going any further than the deck.

Additionally, the Smoky Mountains are all about relaxation when not playing, so things like fire pits, fireplaces, and hot tubs are a common option when selecting a cabin for your getaway.

Pro Tip: Every Smoky Mountain getaway has its own adventures based on where you choose to stay. Choose your lodging accordingly, and you've already won half the battle.

Bringing Your Smoky Mountains Trip Together from Gatlinburg

With the right approach to your vacation and the right Gatlinburg cabin rental, you're all set for the best vacation experience for you (and everyone else). The best time to begin your getaway is now, so start browsing for your favorite rental and get ready to make the memories you want for your next vacation.
